I am writing to recommend Tatiana Welch for a teaching position at your school. Ms. Welch completed two undergraduate courses with me, and in both she was absolutely dependable and very motivated in her work. In our Legacies of Slavery course, she did more work than was actually required: she has an enthusiasm that moves her to do extra and to learn more. Ms. Welch also completed an independent study course on the history of slavery with me, again doing more than was required. Her written work is very good: she has a strong facility for expressing complex ideas and a good breadth of understanding.
In addition to her writing abilities, Ms Welch was a good contributor to class discussion. She didn’t insert herself into conversation constantly, but she asked excellent questions, which testifies to her following, thinking, and analyzing on-the-fly. In other words, she has always shown herself to be engaged fully in the work at hand, takes that work seriously, and helps to guide any given class to full articulation of its subject. In my opinion, this trait—a comfort with ideas and ready ability to converse about those ideas—is an important part of teaching, together with the ability to take in and synthesize new knowledge.
I believe Ms. Welch will make a fine teacher. She is respectful and demonstrates excellent listening skills, which I believe may be more important in a teacher than anything else. She takes criticism well, does not become defensive when any mistakes she makes are pointed out, but instead, delves immediately into the problem to find a solution. She is mature, in other words. In short, Ms. Welch’s intelligence, energy and good will make her an excellent candidate for graduate study, and I recommend her highly.
Sincerely,
Dr. Janie Hinds
